Dolly loves reading

Junior League hops on Parton’s book bandwagon

Imagine that every preschooler in Jefferson County could receive one free book a month, from infancy to age 5.

I had never heard of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library initiative before, but I think it’s pretty cool. From her site:

In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort to benefit the children of her home county in east Tennessee. Dolly wanted to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families. She wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

It’s so true that reading at a young age is so vital to a child’s development. It’s great to see so many communities have gotten involved in this. I wonder if there is any sort of program like this in Canada? I can’t seem to find any info on it if there is (not that I’ve really looked).
