Iqaluit library services cut

It seems the children of Iqaluit are going to have to survive summer without a reading program, giving parents one less diversion for their kids! Unfortunately, the department in charge of the library was too slow in hiring a new librarian (with two leaving) and so they’ve decided to reduce library hours (from 30 to 7.5) and cut back on services.

What is even more disturbing is how the chair of the library board says the board had no say in the matter and was not consulted, even though they have come up with some suggestions.
In addition to no children’s programming, Inter-library loan service is canceled which affects the entire territory.

The job posting (pdf) is still up for a couple weeks and doesn’t require MLIS but a Library tech diploma, though knowledge of Inuit languages and culture is an asset. If I knew anything about the culture, I’d be tempted to apply – doesn’t every librarian dream of going to an exotic location?

  2. that’s good to hear! I’m sure there will be a replacement and this is a case of ‘better late than never’!
